Portal 2D – Alpha

Okay this is a very very alpha release of a game that was created for a team project at the final year of university.

The game is a 2D version of Valves up and coming game Portal. You are a scientist in a lab experimentig with the new handhelf portal device that allows you to create portals anywhere that allow you to pass through to the other side. The goal of the game is to solve puzzles and get to the exit in the fastest time possible.

As i said the game is very very alpha and as such has many holes. The reason i am releasing this now as i dont think im going to have time to work on it in the near future so best get this out now.

I personally worked on the engine of the game, the menus were done by another team member. The engine features full bloom lighting effect to make all those shineys abit more umm shiney :D

Anyways, to play this game you will need the XNA runtimes, use THIS to get them installed.

Once that is done you can go ahead and dowload the game HERE.

Enjoy!

    Hey, very nice idea!
But when I want to start playing, the game crashes.
I installed XNA runtimes, of course, but it is still crashes.((
I can only launch Portal2D.exe and press some buttons in menu, but when i pressing New Game…

“Portal2D.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.”

    What should I do?

PS Sorry for bad English, I am from Russia :)

    Hi Dosia36,

I cant say what it could be im afraid. This version of Portal2D was only a proof of concept realy and has no work done on it atall to try to make it compatible with many PC’s.

The only suggestion I can make is make sure you have a GFX card with Shader Model 2.0 on it as the game DEFINATELY requires this.

Sorry I couldnt be more helpfull Dosia.

Does Radeon 9600 have Shader Model 2.0?

  9. mike.cann Reply

Im not too sure, did a quick google and apparently it has Smart Shader 2.0 but it doesnt say whether that includes Pixel and Vertex shaders at 2.0. Loooks like smart shader 2.1 does include pixel and vertex shaders 2.0 but not just standart 2.0.

So I dont know sorry Dosia :(

    Yup,

Seems to be a common problem, unfortunately I cannot offer any advice at this point as the game is higly alpha and hasnt had any work done on it since it was handed in as part of a group project.

    Sorry,
    Mike
